Then, I started to give the workout a try and realized, this simple shit is hard!

When the song says “Sally Up” you hold the top position of the push-up…

When the song says “Sally Down” you hold the bottom position of the push-up…

And repeat for the entire 3 minutes, 28 seconds of the song…

Jess, here! Clearly, we’ve been slacking on the blog. From a brief moment of truth convo yesterday, it’s been revealed that both Mo and I have been maintaining where we are instead of actually progressing toward our goals. So, with the new month beginning (and a new year pretty soon!), we figured we really need to buckle down.

This morning, I downloaded the 6-week Couch to 5K app on my iPhone and headed to the gym after work around noon. I hate running due to its lack of variety in movement, but I’ve always wanted to be a runner. So here it goes! On day 1, the program is set for a 5-minute warm-up walk, then six 1-minute run + 1.5-minute walk intervals for 15 minutes, and finally, a 5-minute cool down (which I completed on the elliptical thanks to a crazy adrenaline rush).

One of my favorite things about this app is that it allows you to run to your own music, which helps TREMENDOUSLY with the boredom factor. An automated voice from the app just chimes in to tell you “start running” or “start walking” according to whatever interval you’re on. And let. me. telllllll. you… I was GOOD. TO. GO! I’m not feeling sore at all right now either, so I think I’m going to do the workouts in succession, instead of just 3 days/week as the program is designed… it IS grind time after all! :)

Weight Gain season begins now and runs straight through New Year's

“The next two months will bring ample opportunity for you to expand your waistline. Of course the choice is yours.
Why discuss it now and not mid way through December? Because now is your opportunity to plan for the weeks ahead. Once the craziness begins, you’ll be too busy to put a plan into action.

So let’s take this moment of clarity, this calm before the storm, to outline a two-part plan that will save your waist from unwanted holiday inches.

(1) Part One: Your Exercise Plan

Exercise is the first thing people cut when they get busy, and the holiday season is notorious for empty gyms. This year do something different-obligate yourself to exercise. Promising to yourself won’t do it, you need to promise to others so that you won’t drop the ball.

Sign up to work with a fitness expert - This is the perfect solution for consistent, challenging and effective workouts. We’ll give you the attention and assistance that you need to power through the holidays in better shape than ever - talk about motivating!

Join a class - You won’t be as effective exercising on your own during the busy holiday season, so join a class for accountability. Find something challenging that gets your heart rate elevated and uses strength training.

Get a serious exercise buddy - Some friends can be an awesome help while others end up pulling you down. When looking for an exercise buddy consider the following questions:

Do they share your fitness goals?

Are they fairly encouraging?

Do they give up easily?

Are they at your fitness level?

(2.) Part Two: Your Diet Plan

The holidays offer ample opportunities to indulge, so you need to hammer down some guidelines before hitting that buffet line. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t indulge in any seasonal treats, but use moderation. Don’t use the holidays as an excuse to eat until the point of being uncomfortable - will you really miss that bloated feeling? Decide which treats to cut out this year.

Don’t bring edible treats to the office or to parties. You know that the leftovers will come home and you’ll end up eating far more than your share. This year do everyone a favor by not gifting fattening treats.

When faced with a buffet line, load your plate first with greens, vegetables and lean meats before breads and heavier foods. Also drink water with your meal and keep alcoholic beverages to a 2-drink maximum.

Beware of holiday drinks - most are brimming with calories. Hot drinks from coffee shops, cocktails at parties and creamy eggnog are all very enjoyable and all filled with empty calories. Stick with hot tea or unsweetened coffee.

Everywhere you go during the holiday season brings you face-to-face with a plate of sweets. To avoid being a bore but without adding inches to your waist, try the one treat rule. Each time you’re in a social situation that involves sweets just eat one, and enjoy your treat slowly.

You don’t have to gain weight this holiday season. The key is your mindset.

If you approach the holidays with the mindset of, ‘I deserve to indulge and I shouldn’t have to exercise’ then you’ll enter 2012 a few pounds heavier, a little less healthy, and with lower energy than ever before.

I we believe that you deserve better. I believe that you should enter 2012 in better shape than you are today, healthier than you’ve been in a long time, and with more energy than you thought possible.”

I’ve never been a fan of not eating what i want…but I’m trying to be a little better about it by finding healthier alternatives for my cravings. I’m trying to train my brain and my body to look at food as a means of nourishment/fuel/energy as opposed to “enjoyment”/taste (yeaaaah….thats gonna b tough)

Workout:

6:45pm - Afro-Cadence

Afro-Cadence is like a mild version of the African Dance class. It’s more low impact but its still a pretty good workout. The instructor didn’t go too hard but i did break a sweat or two

8:30pm - Step Practice

Diet:

so my building had this fall client appreciation cookout thing going on. I knew the temptations were gonna be heavy so i decided to eat a “heavier” breakfast to control my urge to splurge during the cookout

Breakfast: Veggie Omelette w/ Cheese (mushrooms, spinach, onions, green peppers, and tomatoes) and 1 slice of toast (it was pretty filling)

Lunch: Veggie burger (no bun, or cheese…just the lettuce and tomatoes), 1 scoop of potato salad and 1 scoop of baked beans. This was probably the WORST veggie burger i have ever had (i usually enjoy veggie burgers)..but it did the trick. I was full

Snack: Peanuts (i was SOOOO CLOSE to buying a snicker….but i refrained (*pat on the back*)

Dinner: baked chicken, tomatoes, feta cheese all mixed in w/ some bbq sauce (haha i know it sounds nasty…but it was really good!!)

Snack: Apple

Late snack (haha): Egg sandwich with salmon and toast (DEF shouldn’t have eaten this…but i couldn’t fall asleep due to my hunger pain)

I should probably catch up with Mo on the posts…
So there...

Last Halloween... ^__^

Ce matin... :)

I should probably catch up with Mo on the posts…

So there I am on the left as a Black Panther last Halloween; the picture on the right is from this morning in the gym at my complex with sleep still puffed in my face. I woke up at 5am for NO good reason and couldn’t fall back asleep, so I just went over to get in some cardio before work at 9. My <strike>CAKKKESSSS</strike> thighs and glutes started burning about 2 minutes into the stairmaster, I’m assuming because yesterday’s workout took place around 10 pm, and my legs were spaghetti after that one. But I pushed through for ten minutes… (*cue Black Southern Baptist preacher voice* “FIRSSSST givin’ honah and glory to Pastor Troy and Pandora!!” …lmao, I know, I know… I’m going to Hell. Luckily it’s hot there, maybe it’ll increase my metabolism. lmfao.)

Anywho, I was content with my 10 minutes at 5am, got my blood pumping. I’ll head back over for more cardio/lower body lifting when I get off work this afternoon and may throw in a yoga or pilates DVD as well.

j. cole//work out

j. cole//work out

...Jessi's Back!

OK, OK, OK!

As you can tell from Mo’s gratuitous update for me, Tuesday was an absolute FAIL healthwise. One of my friends was in town recruiting for Nunya University, with a company credit card in hand, and oddly enough, on what turned out to be National Vodka Day. So, very long story short, I joined the celebration. The moral of that very long story? —I’m done drinking for the indefinite future. ‘Nuff said.

Yesterday, I consumed nothing but water, blue Gatorade, and an avocado, turkey, and tomato wrap. Dragging my body around my apartment was the extent of my exercise regimen, and apparently that was strenuous enough, because I woke up this morning three pounds lighter. lol. But here’s my diet/workout regimen for today:

BREAKFAST: Chocolate protein shake (124 calories)

LUNCH: Subway 6 inch Veggie Delight on flatbread with all the veggies, cheese, chipotle dressing (i’m guessing around… 400 calories total) and a blue Powerade (130 calories)

DINNER: Wendy’s full-size BLT Cobb Salad with 1 packet of dressing, ixnay on the croutons (…555 calories?! Only acceptable because this brings my caloric intake for the day to around 1,209 calories.)

WORKOUT: Walking around campus/no elevators in the buildings today! (lol, yes that counts…); 30 minutes (10 minutes per machine) of interval cardio on the stairmaster, elliptical, and treadmill (my legs were WOOOOOBBLY by the end of it!); 3 sets, 10 reps of seated chest press at 45 lbs, 3 sets of 10 reps lat pull downs also at 45 lbs. Tried to hit some pushups at the end of all that and got through 1.2 before my arms just gave out. lol.

^ MMMM… iSWEAT!!! (RIP Steve Jobs…) ^

**Sidenote: Although all my meals today were fast food, it’s definitely rare that this happens. I prefer making sweet love to my kitchen and my tummy at home <strike>on my scary ass gas stove</strike>, but sometimes time/energy/resources on hand don’t really allow it with my school schedule. I think I might start cooking for the week on the weekends to curb eating out though. I’m also going to be more deliberate about consuming the bulk of my calories well before dinner…

HELL-O!

HELL-O!

Tuesday diet: jim beam, ketel one, liits

My muscles were pretty sore so i took it easy

Workout:

7:45pm - African Dance Class

This is probably one of the HARDEST workouts ever (especially with live drums). It’s pure cardio from jumping to shaking your head to shaking ur derriere! Plus the instructor is pretty hard core…we had 3 people leave the class early cus they couldn’t keep up. But it’s a really fun workout. Being that I was born in Kenya, i naturally pick up on the steps pretty fast….however, im not a performer…so it’s still pretty challenging

9:00pm - Step Practice

Breakfast: Oatmeal (instant Maple and Brown Sugar)

12:00pm - 30 minute circuit workout

10 minute intervals on Treadmill

0:00 - 1:00: 3mph

1:00 - 2:30: 7mph

2:30 - 3:00: 6.5mph

3:00 - 4:30: 7.5mph

4:30 - 5:00: 7.0mph

5:00 - 6:00: 3.5mph

6:00- 7:30: 8.0mph

7:30 - 8:00: 7.5mph

8:00 - 10:00: 6.5mph

10 minute intervals on Elliptical

5 minutes on level 17 at 5mph

5 minutes on level 10 at 8.6mph

10 minutes on the bike

level 10 (no intervals, just rode the bike)

6:45pm - Zumba

So I love Zumba (if you’ve never tried it, its a must). My instructor kills it! Got a great workout. Lasted about 45 minutes (she was late..usually lasts an hour). We did salsa moves, some power moves and some weights. Total body workout!

9:00pm - Step practice (my thighs were in pain!!)

Diet

Breakfast - salmon (so not like the real salmon…but like the breakfast kind…the really thin one..i dont know wut its officially called) with provolone cheese (probably could have skipped the cheese) and toast

Lunch - Tuna Salad Sandwich with an Orange

Dinner - Baked chicken breast (3 tenderloins), tomatoes and feta cheese

Snack - Apple

..So I got home late after practice and i was SUPER hungry…so i cooked 2 eggs (egg-whites only) and took one slice of bread and made a 1/2 sandwich with the eggs, the salmon (breakfast again..), tomatoes and feta cheese. Probably shouldn’t have eaten it…but it was good!

Sidenote: i think i need to increase my calorie intake…

meek millz//i’m a boss

meek millz//i’m a boss
